Quick answer: A website security audit reviews software versions, plugins, server and SSL configuration, login and access controls, security headers, backups and common web vulnerabilities, then delivers a prioritised list of fixes. It reduces risk; it cannot promise a site is unhackable.

What a website security audit covers

Most hacked websites were not targeted personally. They were found by automated scanners looking for outdated plugins, weak passwords and misconfigured servers. A website security audit looks at your site the way those scanners and attackers would, and then tells you in business terms what to fix first.

An audit is not the same as malware removal. If your site is already infected, cleanup comes first; the audit is what you do to stop it happening again or to check a healthy site before a launch, a sale or a compliance conversation with a client.

Our audits are practical rather than theatrical. You get a clear explanation of each finding, how serious it is, and exactly what action resolves it, without a hundred pages of scanner output.

Areas we review in a security audit

Software and plugin health

Versions of core, themes, plugins and libraries, including abandoned or untrusted components.

Server, SSL and configuration

HTTPS setup, exposed files, directory listing, file permissions and PHP or server settings.

Login and access control

Password strength, admin user lists, two-step login options, login limits and role permissions.

Security headers and cookies

Browser-level protections and cookie settings that reduce common attack types.

Forms and input handling

Checks for common weaknesses such as injection and cross-site scripting, in line with OWASP-style guidance.

Backups and recovery

How often backups run, where they are stored and whether a restore actually works.

Who is this service for?

Scope of our website security audit

We begin with a non-destructive review. That means checking versions, configuration and publicly visible weaknesses, and then, with your written permission, testing forms, logins and important functions for common vulnerabilities. We agree the scope before starting, including which systems may be tested and when.

For WordPress sites we look at theme and plugin quality, user roles, file integrity and exposed endpoints. For custom PHP or Laravel applications we review authentication, session handling, input validation, file uploads, API security and secret management. Third-party hosting is reviewed within the limits of what your plan lets us see.

OWASP-style checks in plain language

OWASP is a well-known community that publishes lists of the most common web application risks, such as broken access control, injection, insecure design, vulnerable components and weak authentication. We use those categories as a checklist to organise testing and reporting, which makes our findings easy to compare with industry guidance.

We do not claim a formal certification or a guarantee. A website security audit is a point-in-time review. New vulnerabilities appear all the time, so we recommend repeating it after major changes and keeping routine updates and monitoring in place.

The report you receive

Your report lists each finding with a severity rating, evidence, why it matters and a recommended fix. High-risk items, such as an outdated plugin with a known flaw or an exposed backup file, come first, followed by medium and low improvements.

We also give a short summary for non-technical decision makers: what is fine, what is urgent, and what can wait. A walk-through call lets you ask questions. If you prefer, we can implement the fixes, retest and confirm that the issues are closed, or hand the list to your own developer.

When to schedule a website security audit

Good moments are before launching a new site or store, after a hack or malware cleanup, before collecting payments or personal data, when taking over a site built by someone else, after major plugin or hosting changes and at least once a year for business-critical sites.

Security is cheaper than recovery. A cleanup, lost orders, damaged search visibility and customer confusion cost far more than an audit. If you already suspect an infection, see our website malware removal service; for continuing protection, our maintenance plans handle updates and backups.

Frequently asked questions

What is a website security audit?

It is a structured review of your site's software, configuration, access controls and code for weaknesses, followed by a prioritised report of fixes.

How is a website security audit different from malware removal?

Malware removal cleans an infected site. An audit looks for weaknesses to prevent infection or to find the cause of one.

Will the website security audit slow down or break my site?

We agree a testing window and start with non-destructive checks. Any deeper testing is done with your permission and care.

How often should I run a website security audit?

At least yearly for important sites, and after major changes, hacks, migrations or new payment features.

Can you fix the issues found?

Yes. We can implement fixes and retest, or give the report to your own developer.

Do you guarantee my site will be secure afterwards?

No. An audit reduces risk at a point in time. Ongoing updates and monitoring are needed.

What access do you need?

Usually admin or read access, hosting details and written permission for testing. We handle credentials carefully and recommend changing them afterwards.
